Dot Halstead has spent years volunteering at the Historical Society. She knows the place well enough to notice when something has been moved. So when a death there appears to be an accident, a detail that others overlook keeps bothering her.
The town already has a suspect
Craig Marsh had plenty of enemies. His public argument with his brother Dennis over valuable lakefront property gives people a reason to point in one direction.
Dot has known Dennis for thirty years. She wants the questions asked properly before the town settles on an answer. Her years in a classroom have given her plenty of practice watching a room decide who deserves the blame.
Her friends bring their own experience to the case. Margaret examines the money. June works through the records. Beverly makes room for conversations that might never happen during a formal interview.
They begin uncovering questionable anniversary payments, disputed land, and gaps in the town’s official history. The case asks them to reconsider familiar people and places, including things they had taken for granted.
