Launch day is loud, even when most of it happens from a desk.
There are links to check, pages to refresh, messages to answer, and one strange moment: the book that existed in drafts and proof copies is suddenly available to anyone.
Then comes the day after.
The noise settles.
The book remains.
When the Story Leaves the Desk
While I am writing, every scene is still a decision I can change.
I can move a clue, revise an exchange, reconsider what a character notices, or return to a chapter that is not doing its job. Even after the manuscript is complete, there are proofs to examine and small details to question.
Publication changes that relationship.
Readers enter the investigation with their own instincts. One may trust KC immediately. Another may understand why Frank cannot leave his cold case alone. Someone else may notice an apparently minor clue and hold on to it long before the investigators know where it belongs.
That is the point when the story stops belonging only to the person who wrote it.
It begins gathering interpretations I could not plan.
The Work That Remains
The day after a book launch still has practical work.
Retailer pages need another look. Links need to lead where they are supposed to lead. Messages arrive. A detail that seemed settled suddenly asks to be checked one more time.
There’s also a less practical task.
I have to stop looking for one more sentence to change.
At some point, the book has to stand on its own.
For Lethal Design, that means KC, Frank Travers, and the Orlando Prime team now belong to the readers following the evidence with them. The clues are fixed. The choices have been made. The solution is waiting.
All I can do is open the door.

Lethal Design is available now. It is Book 2 in the KC & Orlando Prime crime thriller series, but its central investigation begins and resolves within the novel.
