Why I Love Treasure-Hunt Stories

The Thrills of Following the Clues

One of the things I love most about mysteries is the puzzle.

There is usually a clue. A strange detail. A missing piece. A question that refuses to go away.

In a crime thriller, that puzzle often leads a detective, investigator, or ordinary person in extraordinary circumstances toward the truth. Follow the clues, ask the right questions, and eventually the suspect is revealed.

Treasure-hunt stories work in a similar way, which may be why I enjoy them so much.

There might be a map, a legend, a long-buried secret, or an object that does not seem important at first. Something sparks the curiosity of the person who finds it, and suddenly the story becomes a race to discover where the clues lead.

Maybe there is treasure at the end.

Maybe there is danger.

Maybe the real discovery is not gold or jewels, but the truth someone tried very hard to keep hidden.

That is part of the fun behind The Mercer Files, my upcoming action-adventure novella series.

The series begins with three brothers whose father died in an oil rig accident years ago. For a long time, they believed they knew what happened. But when something new comes to light, old questions resurface, and the truth may finally be within reach.

Each novella will spotlight one of the Mercer brothers as the larger mystery unfolds.

In Black Gold Secret, Book 1 of the series, readers will meet Luke Mercer, the oldest brother, and Gemma Klein, a disgraced journalist looking for a way back from professional ruin. What begins as a search for answers soon pulls them into a dangerous trail of secrets, clues, and discoveries.

For longtime readers, The Mercer Files may feel a little different from my usual crime, conspiracy, and suspense thrillers. It is faster, more action-oriented, and designed as a shorter novella series.

But at its heart, it still has something familiar.

A mystery.

A secret.

A truth waiting to be uncovered.

And, of course, the thrill of following the clues wherever they lead.
