The safest place for a dangerous mind may be where you can see it.
At the center of the Mirror Estate series is an arrangement that should not work.
A notorious criminal mastermind is allowed to live on the estate grounds. In exchange, she assists the government in pursuing other wanted criminals.
It sounds useful.
It is also a terrible risk.
That contradiction is one of the things I enjoy most about writing the series.
Information Always Has a Price
Someone who understands criminal networks, hidden motives, and the way powerful people protect themselves can offer investigators something they may not find in an ordinary case file.
But valuable information doesn’t automatically become trustworthy information.
Every piece must be questioned. Why was it offered? What was withheld? Does the source want justice, protection, leverage, or something no one else has recognized yet?
The government may benefit from the arrangement, but that doesn’t mean it controls every part of it.
That uncertainty allows the larger Mirror Estate story to keep moving behind the individual investigations. Each book has its own central mystery, but the bargain remains in the background. Sometimes it provides a connection. Sometimes it raises a new question. And sometimes the most important clue is understanding why someone wanted the investigators to find it.
Justice, Mercy, and Accountability
The premise also creates questions that fit naturally within Christian suspense.
Can a person do something useful without becoming trustworthy?
Does cooperation erase responsibility for the past?
When does mercy become dangerous and when does refusing it prevent the truth from coming to light?
Those questions don’t have easy answers. The people surrounding Mirror Estate must weigh public safety against the possibility that even compromised help can save lives. They must decide what to verify, what to reject, and how much access is too much.
Meanwhile, the woman at the center of the bargain has her own reasons for cooperating.
Whether those reasons align with the government’s goals is another matter.
A Mystery Larger Than One Book
I enjoy writing investigations that reach a satisfying conclusion while leaving readers with a larger pattern to follow. The Mirror Estate books can be read for their individual cases, but returning characters, family connections, government operations, and unresolved secrets continue across the series.
The deeper you read, the more the arrangement at the estate changes meaning.
Perhaps the question isn’t simply why the government keeps a criminal mastermind close.
Perhaps it’s who benefits most from the bargain.
