A companion novella can sound like a sequel.
In this case, it’s not.
Stolen Secrets, Book 7 of the Mirror Estate series, and Shadow Extraction, its companion novella, unfold along the same stretch of the timeline. They follow different parts of the danger, which means readers see two connected stories rather than the same events twice.
So which one should you read first?
Begin With Stolen Secrets
Stolen Secrets carries the main Mirror Estate investigation. Long-hidden family truths, dangerous identities, and the Ghost storyline move closer together as the people at the estate try to understand who is threatening them and why.
Olivia is important to that larger world, but she is away from the estate when the novel begins. She and Simon are supposed to be on their honeymoon.
Of course, “supposed to be” can be a dangerous phrase in a suspense novel.
The central story belongs in Stolen Secrets, so that is the best place to begin. Let its questions, discoveries, and character moments unfold before stepping sideways into the companion mission.
Then Follow Olivia Into Shadow Extraction
Shadow Extraction doesn’t pick up months later. It turns the camera toward Olivia while the events of Stolen Secrets are already in motion.
Her part of the timeline leads into an international covert mission, an endangered mentor, and a rescue that cannot be handled through ordinary channels. The setting and pace are different from the main novel, but the mission belongs to the same larger conspiracy.
Reading the novella second lets you recognize the references and consequences without interrupting the central investigation. Details that passed briefly through Stolen Secrets gain another layer when you see what Olivia and the off-books team were doing elsewhere.
Is Shadow Extraction Required Reading?
No. Stolen Secrets carries the main novel’s story.
But if Olivia is one of your favorite characters, or if you enjoy international settings, covert teams, and rescue operations, Shadow Extraction opens a door the novel deliberately leaves at the edge of the frame.
Think of it as the companion episode in a television crossover. The main episode still works. The second one shows what another familiar team was handling at the same time.
The Simplest Reading Order
- Read Stolen Secrets.
- Continue with Shadow Extraction.
- If you arrived through Lethal Design, watch for the small crossover threads connecting the Mirror Estate and Orlando investigations.
You don’t need to alternate chapters or build a complicated timeline. Read the novel first, then let the novella show you the mission happening just beyond its pages.
